It is helpful when buying a security camera to know the types of security cameras out there and to know how each one works. There are a wide variety of cameras out there for your use and for purchase. Security cameras can be visible to the naked eye or can be hidden inside teddy bears, pens and other hidden objects that appear to be regular household items. Almost anything can be made from a household item and a hidden camera. This includes clocks and other appliances. If you use a clock, you replace number with a camera lens and voila, you have a camera clock. The video is recorded on its own without intervention from a security system.

Some cameras are stand-alone and go off of batteries, while others are hardwired into a main electrical system that also can take the camera image and put it on a video or computer screen. Standalone systems are those that have the video in the camera itself that must be removed before you can see what the camera saw.

A few hidden security cameras use regular SD memory cards that can be sent to your home computer in order to review the camera shots. The SD memory cards are removed from the camera after it has taken the video stream and the card is put into the computer in a special slot for SD memory cards. This prevents the owner from setting up and wiring a fancy security setup.

You can even wear a video camera discretely. They can be put into neckties, hats or any other easily replaceable item of clothing. You need to have a separate recording device that the person wears in order to catch the audio stream. You can find cameras small enough to record harassment at the workplace or theft in your home. You can hook up the camera to the internet so you can see what’s happening in your home even when you’re at the office. Nanny cams also do the same thing. You can hook up a small camera and have it linked to your computer so you can see what’s happening with your baby at all times on the computer. Whoever is being watched won’t even know they are being watched.

You can have a camera system that includes audio so you can see what is happening and hear what is happening all at the same time. Most people don’t need audio, however, so they just have a silent camera system or stand-alone camera that records the visuals of what you want to monitor but there is no audio associated with it.

They make dome cameras which operate in black and white and let you see a wide angle picture. An infrared camera is also possible, which records things seen in the dark or near darkness. A bullet camera faces just one direction but is cheaper than a dome camera. You can get infrared cameras in a bullet or dome shaped mode. A C-mount camera allows for changing of the lens at any time. If you want a color camera, choose a C-mount camera that can allow for zoom lensing and good resolution, depending on the type of lens you choose. These are just a sampling of the types of cameras you can choose from.

Wireless security cameras are fast replacing wired devices in homes across the country. These gadgets work by transmitting recorded images to a remote device over a wireless Internet connection instead of storing the data internally on a tape or disc like analogue cameras do.

Wireless security cameras have high definition image resolution; they can zoom, pan, tilt and have some truly versatile features.

There was a time, when most home owners couldn’t afford a wireless surveillance system, but this is 2010 and and we’re living in a mobile world. Whether you live in a condo, apartment or villa, here are five reasons why your home security cameras should not be wired.

Wireless is Affordable

Wireless technology has become very affordable. Basic web cameras are available for as low as $20 but prices rise with the number of features the camera has. High definition wireless cameras with night-vision and voice or motion sensors can be a bit pricey, but if you can’t afford that, even a low quality camera does the job well.

In fact, if you’re on a low budget, do yourself a favor and invest in a few hardy PC cameras with microphones instead of over-spending on high-tech gear.

Plus, unlike the traditional wired security camera, you don’t need to hire an expensive firm of experts to install, maintain and monitor your wireless cams.

Wireless Means Easy Installation

You make your pick, buy the item, read the manual and set it up yourself, just like any other wireless toy you have. There are none of the hassles that come with running wires and cables.

This is as simple as removing from box, charging device and placing it in desired position (all while you install the manufacturers’ software). Once the system is rigged to your computer, you can view live and recorded feeds yourself.

Wireless Surveillance = Mobility & Flexibility

As wireless hidden cameras are battery operated, you must have a convenient power source nearby. The battery allows you to relocate cams.

When you’re home you can use it to keep an eye on the the baby while you do your chores. Do remember though, outdoor cameras are tougher because they are weather protected so your indoor camera cannot double up for night duty in the lawn.

Wireless Cameras Are Completely Covert

Wireless cameras are usually compact and easily concealed. This is great as it prevents burglars from spotting the camera and taking it out. Some cameras even come enclosed in a dome to ensure they cannot be tampered with.

Wireless Security Is Smart Security

While surveillance doesn’t prevent crimes, it does catch criminals very effectively. Wireless cameras may include motion sensors that trigger the cameras’ recording. In addition, some cameras are also capable or reporting a break-in to authorities or a delegated neighbor.

While this may not directly prevent burglaries, the extra security will make it easier to apprehend the culprit so you can rest easy knowing your home and loved ones are safe and sound.
