This is a really well thought-out, well documented, beautifully produced book, one that clearly must have been a labor of love for the author and photographers. Having said that, what I found lacking was any info on WHY a periwinkle front door works with a moss green siding. There are a few pages on basic color theory in the front of the book, which don’t go beyond analogous and complementary colors. I would have liked to have seen an analysis of a few of the examples, explaining why the trim color worked with the main color of the siding, and what other colors might have worked. Admittedly, this is heady stuff, and certainly gets into the realm of opinion and style. I am a sculptor who works in metal, and have used color extensively, and adventurously in my own work, but I wouldn’t begin to claim to be an expert on color. For those seeking understanding as to why something works, I would recommend buying a color wheel for $6-$7 at an art supply store, which can go a long way towards explaining the relationships between colors. In the end, my wife and I drove around our town looking at house colors, found something we both liked, and tweaked it from there. Where the book came in handy was in showing just how broad the spectrum of home colors can be, by providing excellent examples. Good Luck!

I thought this book was the most well done and the most useful design book I have ever bought. The woman who wrote this book obviously poured her heart and soul into it. Never have I seen such detail in the resource guide before. The book is beautiful to look at, fun to read and because of the detail in the resource guide it made it extremely useful. I think every designer, architect and homeowner should own a copy of this book.

  3. Wow! An exhaustive discussion laced with incredible photos. Great tips too. If we could rate it with 10 stars, it would be deserving. Anyone looking to add value to their home and improve the appearance, keeping in mind the architecture and history of style, will find this a treasure.

  4. This amazing book has obviously been a labor of love for Ms. Hershman. I have never seen such a comprehensive and interesting study of house colors. We found the perfect solution for our own painting project. I particularly enjoyed the personal touches, such as the pets pictured at the end. Kudos to Susan Hershman!

I love this book so much! It helped me many times to choose even in house colors, let alone helping me with the exterior color. Many friends keep borrowing it from me. And a few had it as Christmas gift from me. So difficult to choose colors. This book helps you to choose and visiualise the end result. It’s just wonderful to look at even if you do not have painting dilemma. Great photography, wonderful lay out…Nowadays everything you need is on the net but this book is one to own….
